CANNES 2003 Directors’ Fortnight

Rabalaire to open

by

Alain Guiraude has been given the honour of opening this year’s Directors’ Fortnight, that will take place from 15 –25 May during the 56th Cannes Film Festival.
Produced by Paulo Films, Rabalaire is the story of a young boy, as was Guirade’s 2001 medium-length feature, Ce vieux rêve qui bouge which won him the “Jean Vigo” award and selected for the 2001 edition of Directors’ Fortnight where it was lauded by Jean-Luc Godard who called it "the best film in Cannes”.
Alain Guirade, who was born in south-west France, is considered as an exponent of a new trend in Gallic filmmaking that sees a return to fundamentals, alongside people like Philippe Ramos whose Adieu pays (produced by Sésame Films) is scheduled for release on 9 April, and brothers Arnaud and Jean-Marie Larrieu whose Un homme, un vrai (produced by Les Films Pelléas) will be released on 28 May.
