Professor Piovani...

by

Italian composer, Nicola Piovani has been given the honour of being the first musician to hold a masterclass called "Leçon de Musique" at the Cannes Film Festival. The masterclass will take place on 20 May as part of a retrospective dedicated to Federico Fellini. “More than a masterclass, which would require the presence of a real professor, this will be my thoughts about music and Fellini’s films,” said Piovani in an interview with Tamtamcinema.it.

Piovani, who won an Oscar for the music he composed for Roberto Benigni’s Life is Beautiful, is also a favourite of Nanni Moretti’s, and he worked on Fellini’s last three films Intervista, Ginger and Fred and La voce della luna. “Fellini wanted music to animate the images from a different point of view,” said Piovani. “ ‘Let’s go and put some wind up this film, a breeze that will cause even the most leaden scenes to take off and fly...’ was what he used to say at our encounters.”
